The Holy Mother Of God

Mary is truly the Mother of God. (De fide.)
In the Apostles’ Creed the Church professes her belief in the Son of God, “born of the Virgin Mary.” As the Mother of the Son of God, Mary is the Mother of God. The Council of Ephesus (431) with St. Cyril of Alexandria declared against Nestorius: “If any one does not confess that the Emmanuel (Christ) in truth is God and that on this account the Holy Virgin is the Mother of God (θεοτόκος)—since according to the flesh she brought forth the Word of God made flesh—let him be anathema.”  D H. Denzinger  113. The subsequent General Councils repeated and confirmed this doctrine. Cf. D H. Denzinger 148, 218, 290.
The dogma of Mary’s motherhood of God contains two truths—
a) Mary is truly a mother, that is, she contributed everything to the formation of the human nature of Christ, that every other mother contributes to the formation of the fruit of her body;
b) Mary is truly the Mother of God, that is, she conceived and bore the Second Person of the Divinity, not indeed according to the Divine Nature, but according to the assumed human nature.[1]

Pratish (Worship) and Christmas and Basharat (Christmas and evangelisation)

Faisalabad – Amid bouquets and garlands, the Diocese of Faisalabad presented two books in Urdu written by two Pakistani priests. For the diocese’s vicar general, Fr Khalid Rasheed Asi, they “are instruments teachers can use to explain the meaning of Christmas to their students.”

The first one is titled Pratish (Worship) and is the work of Fr Iftikhar Moon. The second is called Christmas and Basharat (Christmas and evangelisation) by Fr Younas Shahzad.

The book launch was held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Faisalabad and was attended by priests, catechists, nuns, teachers, students and social workers.

Christmas and Basharat by Fr Younas was especially well received. “With his spirituality, the author enlightens the readers,” said Fr Khalid Rasheed Asi. “The book explains in a clear fashion that the birth of Jesus and the Good News are centred on the poor, the needy and the sinners.”

Fr Younas’ book “explains the importance of some Christmas symbols like the crib, the tree and the stars. It is a beautiful combination of love, peace and evangelism, which is what society needs today,” said Fr Iftikjar Moon, author of the other religious text.

“The book is written in a simple way so that a large number of people could benefit from reading it,” Fr Younas said. “I hope it helps readers grow in faith, knowledge and wisdom.”

The Holy Innocents

The Holy Innocents, Martyrs Feast on Dec 28

Children under the age of two in Bethlehem were massacred by Herod the Great in an attempt to kill the child Jesus.

Father,
the Holy Innocents offered you praise

by the death they suffered for Christ.
May our lives bear witness to the faith we profess with our lips.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Courageous Shahbaz Bhatti

Today as we celebrate the feast of the first Martyr, remembering Saint Stephen, who was one of the first deacons (Acts 6:5). We remember the martyrs of our time who faithfully led their lives proclaiming and living out the Gospel even in the face of persecution.

One such martyr is the Pakistani Minister, Shahbaz Bhatti, who gave his life contending for the rights of marginalized Christian community of Pakistan.

Mary O’Regan has profiled 10 Catholics around the world who showed extraordinary courage, skill and determination during 2011; including Shahbaz Bhatti in the list here.

Hail Mary (Firishte Ká Salám)

The three parts of prayer:

The first part is the greeting of Angel Gabriel to Mary: “Hail (Mary), full of grace, the Lord is with you!” Luke 1:28

The second part is the greeting of St. Elizabeth: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb (Jesus)” Luke 1:42

The third part: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen." In Luke 1: 43 St. Elizabeth marvels “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” and also have a look at (Catechism of the Catholic Church CCC 449, 495 and 2677).
